Homemade Dog Food
Fresh, human grade meat and vegetables, accompanied by the best of intentions is a good start. But even the freshest ingredients and a determination to create a complete homemade diet are not enough without the knowledge to balance the dog's meal plan. Homemade dog food can be far superior to the typical commercial dog food that lines store shelves, and if these homemade meals are balanced, they are without question, the best food for dogs of all ages and sizes.
Veterinarians will warn people away from making their own homemade dog food, and these warnings should be taken seriously. If the meals are not balanced, chronic health conditions can be the result. And these health problems can have disastrous consequences.
A person who was preparing her own homemade dog food and switched to making homemade dog food using Know Better Dog Food noticed an immediate difference and wrote: " My GSD is heartworm positive and we are treating him the slow way. Up till now I have just been giving him raw meaty bones and raw liver with veggies I ran through my vitamix blender along with many human supplements. He seemed tired a lot of the time. With the small pouch I first ordered his energy is almost back to his healthy state. He bounces all over the place when I start to throw his ball and is looking so much happier. I think he needed the balance your mix is providing. I am so encouraged as I recently to my heartbreak lost my two older females to cancer and was worried he was going to follow them. Thank you!"
Homemade dog food should be based on solid science. Good intentions are a good start.
U-Stew for dogs
...to balance home cooking...
Over the years that we have been listening to our customers, we have come to realize that many people are apprehensive about feeding raw meat to their dogs, and opt for cooking. This is a decision that we must respect, and embrace it as a perfectly acceptable alternative. It is certainly far superior to a commercial kibble or canned dog food, as the canine companion has some control over the quality of the meal. However, balance is the key, as is the case with all things in life.
Know Better Dog Food has developed an ingredient pre-mix to balance the cooked meal plan. We have added extra essential fatty acids from fish, for skin and coat care, and psyllium and rice bran for intestinal health. A Digestive enzyme and pre-biotic mix is added to compensate for the cooking of the meat and destruction of digestive enzymes. We have addressed joint care, in the form of gelatin and added Taurine for heart health. Barley grass has been included as an excellent source of minerals and folic acid. Whey protein and egg yolk complement the amino acid profile, and also supply a very rich source of minerals.
The addition of vegetables is a good idea, but should not comprise more than 25% (by weight) of this diet, as we have added these nutrients in the form of kelp, beet root powder and barley grass powder. Vitamins A and D are included in the form of liver powder, and we have balanced the calcium:phosphorus ratio at 1.1:1.
A total of 17 different ingredients have found their way into our new dog food product.
We are very proud to introduce U-Stew for dogs - to balance home cooking.
Canine Ancestry
The dog, our constant and loyal companion, has become a symbol of affectionate fidelity and unconditional love. Today, there is a dog in every part of the human-inhabited world. The relationship that began thousands of years ago with commensal scavenging by tamed wolves has evolved over some 10,000 years into our present day relationship.
The modern dog has become a valued member of the family, but the dog has completely different dietary needs to those of humans. A dog has nutritional requirements that are at opposite ends of the food spectrum. To speak of nutritional requirements of the dog is to speak of the same requirements of the wolf. Science tells us today, through DNA testing, that a dog is a wolf, and this, it appears, is indisputable.
Wolves are carnivores and opportunistic scavengers. They meet their nutritional needs by consuming prey animals, and when necessary, fruits and berries. The domestic dog would do well on a similar raw food diet, however this food duplication would no doubt, pose problems too numerous to mention here. A balanced raw meat diet offers a convenient and healthy alternative.
Dog Health Problems are on the Rise - Why?
We at Know Better Dog Food have been working with canine caregivers over the years, very often as a result of these well-intentioned folks hitting the 'brick wall' of dealing with increasing chronic health problems. These health issues frequently arise as a result of feeding grain-based commercial pet food.
Know Better Dog Food's nutritional analysis is based on years of research and observation, and has resulted in a dog food that duplicates, as closely as possible, the nutritional content of the ancient ancestors of the dog. Easy to use and reasonably priced, it has become the mainstay of a growing number of dogs across North America.
