Canine Obesity

Commercial pet food is, first and foremost, responsible for the proliferation of obese dogs today. In North America it is estimated that 48% of the dog population is overweight. Obesity results when there is an imbalance between the intake and expenditure of calories. It has been found that the carbohydrate content of the diet is most at fault. As stated in the Merck Veterinary Manual, dogs DO NOT require carbohydrates as a part of their daily meal plan. Why is it that commercial pet foods continue to include ingredients such as corn, rice, wheat, barley, and other grains - a cheap source of carbohydrates and filler in their products?
